About the Organization: Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) is the principal investigative arm of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, responsible for investigating transnational crime and threats, specifically those criminal organizations that exploit the global infrastructure through which international trade, travel and finance move. HSI’s mission is to investigate, disrupt and dismantle terrorist, transnational and other criminal organizations that threaten or seek to exploit the customs and immigration laws of the United States. HSI has broad legal authority to conduct federal criminal investigations into the illegal cross-border movement of people, goods, money, technology and other contraband throughout the United States. Placement Job Description: This posting is for the Spring 2024, however, the length of the internship can be extended for the intern to gain more work experience.

Interns will perform a variety of administrative and investigative support duties and observe other events. These may include:

  • The research and analysis of data
  • Assisting in preparing reports
  • Liaison with local and other federal law enforcement agencies
  • Attending court hearings and judicial proceedings
  • Attending meetings at the United States Attorney's Office
  • Shadowing HSI Special Agents during their daily routines.

Interns will be afforded the opportunity to not only work with various investigative teams within the HSI Orange County field office, but also other investigative teams within the HSI Los Angeles area field offices. Core working hours are typically Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm, however, the day-to-day life of an HSI Special Agent varies. There may be some days where hours may be required outside of the core hours. HSI will attempt to schedule these hours around the intern’s schedule.

About the Organization

Mission: To establish Horsemen, Inc. as a superior service provider in the insurance fraud community.
   
Various aspects and job positions within Horsemen, Inc., a private investigations company, will be learned. Participants could work in one or several of the job positions within the company assisting with and administrating investigations for insurance type claims. Some tasks could include data entry, quality control review of reports and video, and shadowing investigators in the field, as they conduct surveillance and obtain recorded interviews for claims and incidents.

Placement Job Description:

To be honest, reliable, and discreet (of any case knowledge or findings) as they apply to attention to detail while learning the various jobs within a commercial private investigations company working with clients who are companies and attorney's. The daily tasks and assignments could range from administrative jobs of data entry, case-setup, working in the audio-visual department to review video and conducting quality control reviews. There could be limited field work opportunities during a participants tenure, of shadowing investigators as they conduct surveillance or obtain statements.

  • Must pass a background check for civil and criminal history, a reference check, and drug screen.
  •    They will be required to sign a non-disclosure agreement.
  •    Be able to work cohesively in an office environment as a team member, conducting individually assigned tasks, while being discreet with any information learned, regarding case information and details.

Probation Officers and Staff: What Do We Do?

  • Provide Supervision: 
    • Probation Officers currently supervise approximately 1,550 youth and 11,200 adult offenders who are on probation or in court-ordered diversion programs. 
  • Probation plays an important role in rehabilitating criminal offenders by ensuring that court-ordered programs are attended, referring offenders to counseling and therapy programs, helping offenders stay in school or maintain jobs, and requiring them to pay restitution to victims of crime.
  • Probation protects the community by enforcing court orders, reporting law and probation violations to the court, arresting probationers when necessary, and conducting drug tests and searches on probationers. 
  • Prepare Reports for the Court Probation Officers assist judges in their sentencing decisions by preparing various written reports.
    • Such reports provide biographical, social, psychological and criminal background information on individuals facing criminal charges and make recommendations to the court on these cases. Probation Officers also write reports advising the court of progress and performance of those already on probation.
  • Manage Specialized Caseloads: Intensive supervision of selected caseloads is provided by the following:
    • Domestic Violence Unit
    • Drug and other Collaborative Courts
    • Foster Home and Placement Units
    • Gang Violence Suppression Unit
    • Mentally Ill Offender
    • Secured Electronic Confinement
    • Sex Crimes

Probationers who no longer require close supervision may be transferred to caseloads with minimal monitoring.

Operate Juvenile Facilities: The Probation Department operates Juvenile Hall and two other juvenile facilities. These facilities are staffed primarily by Deputy Juvenile Correctional Officers (DJCOs) who oversee and supervise all the daily activities of youth in their living units. Activities include: showers, hygiene needs, meals, movement to schools, recreation, physical exercise, conducting special educational groups, assisting them with working on individual goals, situational counseling, arranging for medical needs, providing them with structure regarding expectations and rules, dealing with discipline issues and other duties as determined.

About the Organization:   By providing a digital archive of stories, UCI PrisonPandemic™ is bringing greater transparency to the COVID-19 crisis in prisons and jails. Made up of faculty and students at the University of California, Irvine, it is an ongoing initiative to collect stories from people incarcerated in California carceral facilities, their family members and loved ones, and the staff who work in these facilities. In creating PrisonPandemic, our hope is that the archive will outlive the COVID-19 pandemic and serve as a resource for understanding the unequal toll of the criminal justice system in the United States.
 

Placement Job Description: 

   In this experiential learning lab, you will work in teams with faculty and graduate students to assist in collecting and processing stories from incarcerated people in California. Student tasks will include: redacting, scanning, and processing letters from incarcerated people for permanent library archiving; and transcribing and identifying key themes in letters or audio files for inclusion on the PrisonPandemic website. You will gain research skills while working on a community oriented education project and have the opportunity to reflect on and write about this experience with small group members, classmates, and PrisonPandemic faculty and graduate students. Class attendance will be in person.
