Winter '22 Field Study Updates

Last updated 1/19/21

We recognize that many of you may be frustrated or disappointed by the continual changes and uncertainty in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic; we want to assure you that we are making every effort to prioritize your safety and well-being when adjusting our programming and policies. As Chancellor Gillman indicated, campus will re-open to in peson instruction on January 31st.

In the meantime, the following modifications to the field study programming are currently in effect, but are subject to change:

  • The minimum requirement for fieldwork hours during winter ’22 has been reduced. See below for the new requirements per units enrolled:
    • 4 units = 64 Hours
    • 5 units = 80 hours
    • 6 units = 96 hours
    • 7 units =112 hours
    • 8 units = 128 hours

  • For weeks 1 & 2:
    • Students may, with permission from their fieldwork supervisors, choose to participate in any fieldwork hours remotely during the first two weeks of winter quarter, if doing so is feasible. Students may only count remote fieldwork hours completed during the first two weeks of winter quarter toward their reduced 64 total required fieldwork hours for the quarter; in-person hours completed during the first two weeks CANNOT be counted.

  • For weeks 3 & 4: The following fieldwork options are available for students:
    • Students in all-remote placements will continue their remote fieldwork per usual.
    • Students in placements that allow both remote and in-person fieldwork during weeks 3 and 4 may choose to complete their fieldwork in whichever format they feel most comfortable.
    • Students whose supervisors do NOT provide a remote fieldwork option and who cannot complete in-person fieldwork during weeks 3 and 4 may participate in an alternative remote fieldwork project.
      • Sign up HERE to enroll in the alternative remote fieldwork option.

  • Starting week 5
    • All students are expected to resume their regular fieldwork format (in-person, remote, hybrid).
    • Students should communicate closely with their supervisors to make fieldwork arrangements for the remainder of the quarter.

We know that these changes are sudden and we are grateful for your flexibility and understanding as we navigate these new challenges and work toward providing you with a safe and rewarding field study experience.
