What are the differences between graduate programs?
PhD Programs
- Usually 4-7 years
- Gives extensive knowledge in the field
- Most are funded (check each program!)
Master’s Programs
- Usually 1-2 years
- Solid education in a specific field
- Most are not funded, some scholarships available
JD Program
- Three years
- Most are not funded, some scholarships available
What is a Post-Baccalaureate Program?
- Usually 1- 2 years
- Used to support the transition from undergrad to graduate school
- Either meet course requirements for a master’s program or gain more research experience
- Most are not funded, some scholarships available
What are some things to do before starting the application?
- Talk to faculty about their role
- Graduate School Fairs, panels, and professors are a great way to interact and ask questions in person
- Emailing professionals quick questions, or asking to shadow their role is an additional way
- Research specific programs
- Think about the geographic location as well
- Living somewhere for 1-7 years is a huge commitment and possible lifestyle change!
- Look up the size of the school, and what the student-professor relationships are like
- See what sort of research students are exploring and studying
- Set up an informational interview with someone in the program (network through LinkedIn/ Anteater Network)
- Research where alumni of these grad programs end up career wise
- Think about the geographic location as well
- Think about how you will pay for the program
