Hollywood & Labor: AI, Technology, and the Future of Work in the Entertainment Industry

Research Workshop and Lunch with Miranda Banks and Kate Fortmueller, authors of Boom to Bust: How Streaming Broke Hollywood Workers, for students who want to learn more about the methods and ethics of interviewing workers and unions as research subjects. It may be particularly appealing for those who want to focus on entertainment industry research, but everyone can benefit from the research advice!

📅 Tuesday, October 6

Panel Discussion on the rapid transformation of Hollywood and the entertainment industry that vastly contributes to the Southern California economy. We will convene a discussion about how the industry has been revolutionized before (streaming, for example), how it is changing yet again, and what this has meant for workers, including the historic WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes during the pandemic that shut down Hollywood for 118 days driven in large part over AI. Our event takes place in the context of Governor Newsom's recently signed, first-in-the-nation protections for California workers from AI and Big Tech that were advanced by Labor.

The panel is composed of Actress and SAG-AFTRA representative Ellen Crawford, Labor and Technology Intelligence Officer of IATSE Jillian Arnold, Professor Miranda Banks, Professor Kate Fortmueller, and Law Professor Jack I. Lerner.

📅 Tuesday, October 6

⏰ 2–4 PM
